Being Asked To Leave A City Instance

So Saturday afternoon I log on and see that a city seige of Altdorf is underway, so I plod on over to Reikland and go through the gates to join a scenario, just as another warband is going in. Fine, maybe with a bit of luck I will get to play with people who know what they’re doing, which is always a pleasant change, reminds me of the good old days of Team Conclave on the DAOC servers. It’s nice not to get spanked all the time.
I recognised a few names from people who often lead warbands on the order side, a good sign. I watch as they juggle around their groups to make best use of the resources available and let them settle down. I’m sure you’ve all seen it when everyone leaves you and some other poor smuck on the side, as they jump to group 5 and 6 (In this case it was 3, 4, 5 and 6). It’s very much like the last 2 players picked for the football team, we’ve all been there, some more than others.
Fair enough, they’ve settled down and I join a group which has a slot, so that at least I get some heals, it’s not unreasonable, I am that proverbial glass cannon.
Then I get a pm from 2 of the people in the warband, in which I’m asked to leave the scenario to make room for someone else who can’t get in. They were polite, not rude. If I was to say that I was peeved, it would be mild understatement. I’m older than most of you and there are very few things in gaming that actually bother me, since I treat it as the game it is. This was one time when I did get annoyed. I replied that I wasn’t happy, but I would leave anyway.
I’m sure that there isn’t a general misunderstanding here, but when you join a scenario (a city seige), it’s random, it’s in the lap of the gods who you get.
When I used to run Team Conclave in DAOC on Dvyet, I had a very simple rule. If we needed someone to fill in a slot, for whatever reason, they had that slot for the full 4 hour RvR session. They helped us out of a bind, then they would get to reap the rewards for that night, even if someone else from the guild came on later. No matter how much it may have annoyed a late arriving guildie.
Now I appreciate that this isn’t the same, but it gives you some kind of idea of where I come from. So I would like to thank the fine members of Uprising of Karak Norn for their community spirit, since obviously 3 groups wasn’t enough, to pown Destruction. Heaven help us if one of their groups couldn’t have gone into another scenario to help some other lowbies. A one side slaughterfest is about as much fun as pulling nasal hair, the ones you remember are those that go to the wire. Maybe I’m just strange like that.
Should I have written about it, maybe not. I would however ask that for those of you who read this, have some thoughts for others and consider the message you send when you play.
A final note. If you want to annoy those fine guilds who want to join with 4 groups, watch as they group up outside the gates of the city and when they go in, join in. The server wants to split them up, so help it out.
