Though I don’t play Guild Wars very much anymore all this talk about Guild Wars 2 has me jumping in and playing the last couple of weeks.  As I was watching a video of the Dynamic Events panel from GDC it got me thinking about some of the things I enjoy in GW1.

• I don’t enjoy the fact the game is instanced, but what it does allow is the opportunity for quests to actually have lasting effects in my world.  Yesterday I did a quest that had me investigate and kill some problematic harpies.  After eradicating the harpy nests and completing the quest, the next time I had to head back into that zone those nests were no longer there.  Which makes sense seeing as I eliminated them.
• I like that if I friend someone I just have to add whatever name they’ve given me.  From then on, whichever character they log in to will show up on my friends list.
• I haven’t had much time to play around with the hero system but from what I have seen, I like.  A much better alternative than always using the henchmen.  It’s like having my own custumizable posse!
• I’ve never really had the ability to use it, but I love the guild hall.
• I especially like having a primary AND secondary profession/class.  I think it allows for a very personalized gameplay experience.
• Only 20 levels … LOVE!  Making it about skill and enjoyment rather than slogging through levels just to see the real content (or end game content) definitely appeals to my casual playstyle.  I do enjoy leveling but more for the feeling I get because I leveled.  Being able to still gain XP in order to “level” and earn another skill point to advance your character is pretty cool.
• Gear not playing a major role makes me happy.  In other games it seems I’m always behind in terms of gear because I haven’t been able to run those uber dungeons or kill those super elite mobs to get those gear drops.
• Dyes!  Though I’ve just been hoarding all the dyes that drop instead of actually using them, I love that I have to option to dye my gear.
• Shared bank space for all your characters.  Need I say more?

I’m sure if I sat down over the next few days I could continue to come up with things I like about Guild Wars.  For now, I’ll leave it at this.
