Maybe I should start twitter with this short format of posts

This news in the herald about the live event NPC removal due to effect on server performance made me.. think again. What the…?

It’s one NPC and they can’t fix it and it decreases server performance in the Capitol city region? This makes me rather speechless. Well.. not so speechless like the never-ending lag in front of the library in uncontested Altdorf. I guess this one will never be fixed, because now it’s already a tradition to have a lag/fps-issue in front of the library. You should think that a open texture is easily fixed..well maybe not. The game is quiet full of those things. To me it seems sometimes as such things were never checked and therefore persist and some even exploit it..

I’m atm not sure where the game is heading, but I’m rather sceptical that it will be towards better fights (i.e. zone design and performance) and more towards unnecessary fluff (RR100, better armor, more of this and more of that to collect)..

Seems quiet negative? Well.. yes. The game is heading into a direction I don’t like ..but let’s see. Maybe Mythic surprises me.

The WAR Bureau turned 1, congrats! Making it a year is not an easy accomplishment.
Mmmmm Gud decides to try and mimic famous Warhammer Orcs with the new appearance system. Very nice idea, shows some of the potential with the new game feature.
The backseatdev has some ideas on how to reduce spawn camping. This is a tough one, but should be looked into. Altough, on my Engineer I actually enjoy being spawn camped. It is a ‘how much damage can I do’ mini-game. It would suck as melee though.

Time to get back to showing some of the excellent new weapon models introduced in the 1.3.6 patch. A large percentage of the new art went to the High Elves. Just like any good Dwarf, I like shields. The High Elf versions are pretty nice, even if they are a bit to fancy for me. On to the new models!

This is something I have to ask myself often since patch 1.3.6. Most of the time it’s really difficult to say what is going on, as I experience some severe server/client lag and the loss of my castbar doesn’t improve this. As a healer it’s easiest to compensate this stuff by spamming group-heals, but this is by far not the most effective way (especially with my spec), but better play at 80% effectiveness than at 0 %.

I am used to client side problems as my rig is..bad..really bad..Pentium D bad, but it seems to me that the performance of the game is totally luck and more based on chaos theory than on setup of your PC. Sometimes the game runs smooth for me, but others complain about lag..most of the time though it’s the other way around. Funnily I have no problem with ctd’s when there are a lot of players around, but others with better machines do get kicked..

Whatever..this is not what I wanted to write about. On of the things that bothers me is that this server/client lag is frustrating. In a RvR-game you die..you die a lot, but I want to know why I die and I want to die, because the opponent is better, not because he/she had some luck and hat less lag.. The client performance needs to increase..not the obtainable RR. It’s also no fun to see how you kill someone, because he can’t do anything because of the amount of attacks (not damage) you deal and the lag this produces on his/her machine.

Things start to get really frustrating when the game gives no feedback.. I guess every healer experienced it that the heal got through (gcd fired of, ap got reduces), but the health-bar did not change in any way (sometimes even the combat log doesn’t show it, but let me not start about the combat log ; )). This hp-bar reaction should have been improved in patch 1.3.6, but I think it’s still nowhere near good.

Another thing that is related to the lag-issues..this is the point why I even started this rambling..

Sometimes the enemies behave strange. Yesterday I saw a Sorceress strafe in mid-air for nearly 20s ..Sometimes melee dps hit me from the top of a wall while I’m standing way below them for several seconds and so on. This is most likely related to lag and therefore the wrong positions my client is showing me (I don’t think that there are that much cheats/hacks around as I experience weird stuff).. So I’m sometimes not really knowing what my own character is doing, but more than often I have no clue where everyone else is, because my client is just showing the wrong positions. This has nothing to do with my hardware, but is a fault by Mythic’s Engineers. Oh..btw. I’m not talking about the monster called Zerg vs. Zerg..This even happens in small scale fights like scenarios or roaming through less populated zones.

So what this game needs more than anything else is performance improvement.. Maybe than those “X,Y..are all cheaters” will get less, because people now understand and see what is happening and don’t just die and have no clue why. Also melee range might get one digit sized again

I have had a little bit more free time than usual, so I spent it on improving the Arsenal of WAR. I know, it sounds productive. Don’t worry, I will be back to my slacking ways eventually. There have been quite a few changes to the Arsenal, read on for the details.

The Arsenal of WAR has moved to http://www.arsenalofwar.com/
Pocket items and mounts have been added
Filters have been added to each class page: LotD and Scenario
Costs have been added: Emblems, LotD Currency and in some cases Gold|Silver|Copper
The Arsenal is up to 2,130 items

Up next for the Arsenal will be search capabilities. I’m really looking forward to adding that, I have a few ideas I’m still kicking around.

With the RvR Q&A thread winding down, Andy dropped a rather big surprise on us. He didn’t go into details, but sometimes a ‘yes’ is all we need to hear. The challenge with Q&A’s is that the right question needs to be asked. So, what am I talking about?

Are there any plans for mobile siege weaponry?

Yep.

It seems like movable siege weapons will be coming to WAR. He could mean vehicles, but I am leaning towards siege weapons which can be moved without the need of a pad. Very exciting prospect which could shake up ORvR as we know it.

Here are the rest of the answers:

What is the target number of city sieges per week the developers are aiming for?

I don’t believe there’s a “magic number” that we’re shooting for. The general consensus amongst the dev team and the Community right now is that the City Sieges are happening to frequently. The idea is to make the City Siege experience not necessarily commonplace and something that’s special. Whether that number is once a day or only a few times a week is what remains to be seen.

Do you feel there will be greater limitation on accessibility of city sieges (endgame content) for casual players vs hardcore players, which may inadvertently tailor the game to people who can be online greater amounts of time? If no, can you please explain why?

There will always be somewhat of a divide between Hardcore and Casual players. Sure someone whom is more casual is able to go into a city and get Sov armor, but when exactly will they be able to wear it? As things stand right now, WAR can be viewed as a backwards achievement in gear progression. The high end gear isn’t uber difficult to come by, however the capability to use it requires a significant investment of time.

Of course we’re going to continue to work to keep WAR accessible as possible to everyone, regardless of playstyle, however there are some things which are simply a matter of time invested.

Will the new changes leave you guys any hypothetical wiggle room to continue doing things like this every 6-8 months, like adding Vampire Count & Lizardman Theme Packs with their own spin-off RvR zones and playable characters, or is that just crazy talk?

Without confirming a timeline or future content, yes, the idea is to set ourselves up to deliver on RvR packs more frequently than one would see traditional expansions.

Do you want to slow down the acquisition of ORvR gear, or just the ORvR Campaign?

Both.

Any elaboration on comments that you might be able to purchase certain gear in-game?

Through an item shop? Not under discussion at this time. Changing things so that some armor is purchaseable by gold? Possibly.
I think dispersing the zerg was mentioned as a goal. Can we expect gameplay to shift more toward small groups roaming around looking for a fight.

Changes being made to ORvR have a focus on encouraging the zerg to spread out.

Any plans to change corpses to visually tell who can be rezzed ? Hoveering over is challenging and not practical in crowded places. Similar to bodies become tombstones etc in daoc.

Not at this time, although I’ll certainly pass that along.
Are respecing costs going to be looked at as the general consensus is they are too high and make experimenting with builds and/or switching between PvE and PvP more difficult than most people would like.

No. We’re not interested in removing economy sinks.

Any chance of ever making RvR tome tactics?

Not in the scope of this RvR pack

Since skaven are being introduced will warpstone be introduced and if so will it have tangible effects like it does in lore

Where there are Skaven, there is usually Warpstone…and vice versa.

Will there be any option offered in the rvr pack to transfer/consolidate characters on different accounts? An example of having 2 separate accounts of order characters being transferred to a single account.

At this time, no.

Since I imagine an open RvR in development thread is going to go up soon enough, i’ll hold off on asking about the specifics. However, is there going to be any effort to focus on one pairing at a time so people can’t run away from a fight to an empty zone?

This is a very sticky wicket here…there is a fine line between encouraging action into one zone and putting things so entirely on rails that there is no opportunity for dynamic gameplay. Mike Wyatt is much more qualified to answer this question than I am, however I can say it is a consideration.

Secondly, is it at all possible (either in 1.4 or beyond) for a sort of “reverse bolster” to be implemented in lower tiers? …

At this time we don’t plan on revisiting the debolstering mechanic.

Gold spammers are currently devastating the advice chat. Do you plan on forbidding the free endless trial users to type in the advice channel? Or do you have another course of action to solve that problem?

We have another course of action which will be introduced very soon, it’s just undergoing it’s last bit of testing. (Werit: I think this is the right-click report spammer option which will escalate based on how many players reported it)

The Eternal Citadel was fun and good use of now obsolete content. Any chance we’ll see other such environments turn up as scenarios … Altdorf Palace, the Monolith, Undercroft, War Quarters?

There are a ton of great environments in WAR, especially in the cities, that are no longer being actively used. I’m sure that the development team could make a strong case for these environments being repurposed in the future.

Along those lines, pure PvE zones like the Isle of the Dead, West Praag, Cinderfall, and Death Peak … will any of these ever be repurposed for RvR? There’s a lot of real estate out there going to waste.

That’s a great suggestion and one that we’ve discussed. Nothing that we can currently discuss however.
How much misdirection can we expect … meaning, there’s a lot of info out there about the packs … are there any left field surprises that will take the playerbase by surprise?

I think there’s more than a few things that will take the Community by surprise coming out of the RvR Packs (in a good way).
Since Patch 1.4 sounds like it will be pretty big … will it be accompanied by a Live Event?

That is not yet determined.
Is there a chance to see a ‘Rested RP Bonus’ like the there is for EPs? Maybe in ‘Progression’?

This is a suggestion we’ve brought to the development team before…however there are no current plans to implement such a system.

This week, WAR saw a bit of downtime due to ISP troubles and a new Hot-fix. I didn’t have much time to play because of RL happenings and work on the Arsenal of WAR. I did get to group up with some guildies and take advantage of Against All Odds. Some great fights were a result. What has the rest of the WAR community been up to?

Andy continued to answer questions in the RvR Pack Q&A thread.
A new Hot Fix was released which included bug fixes and adjusting of Zealots/Rune Priests.
The August Producer’s Letter was also released.
The Wild Hunt live event is in progress.
The Khaine’s Embrace scenario is also open for all tiers.

ZAM returns to WAR. The article is a few weeks old, but they seem to be enjoying their return to WAR so far.
Gaarawarr posted a guide to this years Wild Hunt live event. Excellent work as always. Interesting rewards, including a new Event slot item.
Bootae and his guild Kill Frenzy brought forth the Squig Apocalypse! That many Squig Herders will give me nightmares for weeks to come.
The Price of Wargh gets a snazzy new look (that’s right, snazzy). Also he has a few problems with the city PQ loot system. I can’t say I’m a huge fan either. I really just want to be able to opt out of Gold bags.
Skuz has a problem with a recent article by Massively about WAR’s upcoming RvR Pack. Give it to ‘em Skuz!
Mmmmm Gud wrote up an interesting article about 5 concepts that did not make the live game. I had not known about some of these, wonder what WAR would be like if everyone had a shot at an instant rez…

Arsenal of WAR Update

Earlier in the week I introduced a new item database called the Arsenal of WAR. It is nothing too fancy, but gets the job done. I have found myself using it to figure out what weapons my alts should be using. Today I uploaded a new version.

Other than more weapons, this version now lists Shields and Charms (Books, Chalices etc). Starting with 208 and 110 items respectively. Check out the Swordmaster page for an example.

Next up for the Arsenal is pocket items. After that I think it is time for armor and armor sets to be added.

More RvR Pack Q&A

As mentioned a few days ago, Andy started up a Q&A thread for the upcoming RvR Pack. The thread is still going on and Andy is still answering questions. I am going to take the easy way out on this post, so prepare for copy and pasting!

Will future sets follow the 8 piece format or continue to take more slots.

Most likely no, although that is not yet finalized

Will new potions and tails be introduced

We’re not yet prepared to discuss potential crafting changes

Will this introduce 2 new tiers of Sc weapons if so will be able to convert existing stockpiles of royal insignias into the new tiers.

New items to be earned through RvR will be introduced. We do not currently have, nor do we plan to introduce, a system to upconvert Tier 4 currency.

With the sub rr 80s getting an easier time to reach 80 is their going to be something to reward preexisting 80s on release even if its just a couple of days of bonus renown for them.

We regularly have bonus Renown/Experience weekend with the launch of a new version.

Will the culmination of the end game still be the capital even for RR 100 players or will their be another end game goal other than the siege.

Cities are currently set to remain the culmination of the Tier 4 campaign.

Why do you guys want to slow the campaign down? (I can understand slowing the gear progression down)

City Sieges happen too quickly, ORvR progresses too fast. We wish to slow this down to provide a more engaging and immersive ORvR experience.

With these rvr packs, will we be able to make some kind of income if we only do rvr? As it is now leveling through T1 – T4 rvr only, I can barely make enough money to keep going to all of the different zones. In fact, I often have to get a loan from my high RR guy.

This is going to be a vague answer:

There are things slated to be introduced in the RvR pack which are designed to have a secondary effect of improving the in game economy and giving those who like to play the market something to do.

Will the armor redesign you guys were talking about some time ago make its appearance in this pack or did you abandon this project for the time beeing?

At this time there are no plans to change the art files of the existing armor sets.

There was I question about housing, I understand that housing is probably not really fitting for War but might there be something else planned for guilds, like the guild hall in Sigmars Hammer (which is not accessible to all guild members). Something like a great hall for general guild use (role playing wise)?

Most likely no, at least not in the RvR Pack.

Can we expect at RvR packs to see dps of the weapons for magic DD and healers to be added to spells and heals (is that idea totaly left out or it can be done at some time?)

This specific change is not planned to be introduced at this time.

Coinciding with the renown ability system changes – will we be seeing any form of “dual specialization” for either renown or career abilities? Maybe a onetime fee of 1000 gold for the option to have a second specialization that can be changed when not in combat? This would be extremely handy for people who are constantly re-speccing for pve etc.

Good idea, however not planned at this time AFAIK.

Do you plan to add server overlapping scenarios? With some balance considerations? (3-5 Healers/Tanks/DDs per Side (in case of random groups), both side got around the same RR and so on)

We are very interested in a cross server Scenario queue, however that feature isn’t planned for the RvR Pack. We will be investigating other matchmaking possibilities, however nothing we can comment on at this time.

Do you have any plans about a arena or duelling system?

Not at this time

I assume there will be a PVE Pack after the PVP Pack. Do we have to wait around another year till we get new PVE content(hopefulle not with 5 Bugs a boss!!!)?

I wouldn’t assume that. We’re not interested in adding anything to the game that doesn’t have a strong RvR focus.

You mentioned earlier renown ranking from 81-100 wont be easy, are you basing this on a hardcore style of play or the casual gamer? for example if you look at dark age of camelot only 5 or so players have ever reached realm rank 13, i would like to think 90-100 would follow a similar pattern such as rank 12-13 in dark age of camelot.

The intent is to make this an achievement, something significant, however not something unattainable.

Will our shiny supreme wards ever be put to use?

At this time we have no plans to utilize Supreme Wards.

Are you planing with the new rvr packs to add new mounts maybe flying?

We like mounts…

On page 2 or 3 you talk about intentionally slowing down the campaign. What do you mean by campaign? Player progression through the ranks/gear? The number of times a city siege happens each day? How long it takes to lock a zone?

Not necessarily, Yes, Yes.

are there going to be any new pets added in?

Define pets? Like Career Specific (WL, Eng, MAgus, SH?)? No.

Other than that…

With the removal or change(a little confused as the producers letter say “as you know it” and a podcast I believe that Carrie said they were removing it) of the VP system, will you be implementing cross server scenarios?

No to cross server Scenarios.

The term “Victory Points” is something that is IP specific to Warhammer Fantasy. That is why we stated “as you know it” as the term itself will probably be repurposed to mean something completely different than what it represents now.

Arsenal has two important meanings; one is a storage facility for weapons and ammo, the other is a London based football team that plays truly beautiful football, but is unfortunately full of whinging cry babies, dirty cheating bastards and has a myopic Frenchman for a manager.

Werit, bless his dwarven beard, is creating something that combines the former with a little bit of the latter, as he’s building a weapon and armour database for WAR and in my book that counts as going beyond the rest of us and our standard blogdom and trying to score a rather high quality goal. It’s only in the alpha stage, but our little stuntie friendy is beavering away and updating regularly and you can instantly see the potential for the future with Werit’s goal being, as he describes it:

Why another item db? My goal is for this to be clean, quick and up to date.

So I’m back and from my vacation I took a cold as a souvenir.

Besides sneezing the whole time I tried to catch up with the news about the RvR pack, did play some WAR and our guild had a RL guild meeting last weekend.

The guild meeting was fun. It’s always interesting to meet the people behind those characters. We drank beer, some have sung a song and we burped, as someone brought a Wii to the meeting. Dwarf-only guilds are the best

Concerning WAR (RvR pack, etc..) .. my mood is atm not so positive. Since the move from GOA to Mythic the performance of the game reached an all-time low. It’s totally horrible playing a Runepriest as there still is the cast-bar bug and you have no idea what you are currently doing. At least I have no clue as I mix several spells and have no fixed rotation for healing. Therefore I need to know what my character is currently doing, but with no reliable cast bar..and several animation bugs it’s totally hopeless to even try to be an effective healer in any way. The new mechanic is still horrible, as it restricts me too much. Well.. I could use those glowing hands if someone of the group needs a beacon if he/she gets lost. Server lag for me is still a big issue and I can’t tell if the warping enemies are cheating or if it’s just the server performance… the game is currently in a state where it’s not much fun to play because those bugs and poor performance.

Adding to this comes the news about the RvR pack. There is not even the slightest glimpse of hype around it.. no looking forward to it. It’s more like a.. “Do I want to grind any more renown ranks, just for the sake of it or just for better equipment”? The information about it is slim and the new producer’s letter isn’t telling anything new, even though Mythic always pointed to the letter for further information.. well.. marketing is telling something different than Andy it seems.

I don’t like the tone of those RvR packs. Vertical progression is something the players are used to from other MMOs, yes.. but it’s imho not the route a RvR based game should take. The tyrant set showed that this is a bad way for WAR.

My problem with WAR right now is.. it’s not about fighting.. Everything is based around tokens, points and such stuff.. therefore all RvR action is based around keeps, objectives and zone locking. There is hardly any room for fighting. The whole design is not around giving places to fight other than some BO’s and keeps. Only Praag offers enough options for small groups when there is a zerg around. Thankfully our guild runs a rvr roaming group for seeking fights and not for pure/easy renown grind. If I want to farm.. I get to the garden.

A Patch and a Letter

Yesterday during the weekly maintenance a new Patch was introduced. This just wasn’t just a run of the mill bugfix as it had an important change for Zealots and Rune Priests. The Producer’s Letter for August was also posted. Continue on for more details.

First, the patch. Several bugs were fixed, including:

The loss of textures has been fixed.
Siege weapons should once again hit for more than 10 damage.
Health bars should now be a bit more reliable.
Keep doors should now always be targetable

As for the Zealot/RP, their toggle cooldown has been reduced to 20 seconds, down from 30. They will also convert stats at a 1:1 ratio instead of 2:1. This will be a nice buff for healing and damage dealing. The issue of CC while healing will still remain.

August has passed us by which means we have a new Producer’s Letter! If you are like me and enjoy stalk… I mean following… the developers, there is not much new information to be found. It does provide a nice recap of the last months news for a wider audience though.

One piece of news from the letter for my EU readers: Mythic will be at Games Day UK on September 26th 2010.

Arsenal of WAR

Succeeding in WAR means knowing how to equip yourself for a fight. In recent patches, a ton of new weapons have been added to the game. To help find the right fit, I made a new item database called the Arsenal of WAR.

There are existing item databases, but most are not up to date. My goals with this one are: simple, clean and up to date. Currently, it only supports weapons, I hope to expand it to armor soon.

The last couple of weeks have been filled with RvR Pack news from gaming events in Cologne and Baltimore. While we did get some good information from the attendees, Mythic wanted to take a more direct route with their players. Andy, community manager, started up a Q&A thread on the forums.

What did we find out?

Skaven will not be a NPC realm and will have a direct effect on Open RvR.
The Personality Pack may include cosmetic items.
The RvR Pack will make keep battles more than just breaking down the door.
Keeps and BO’s will not be the same as they are now.
They are not looking to expand the influence system.
Open RvR changes will affect Tiers 2 through 4.
NPC encounters would be similar to the city siege.
Skaven won’t be boring.
Certain aspects of the Open RvR changes will only be available in the RvR Pack.
They are investigating ways for players to stay in lower tiers.
No new career mastery paths.
Catapults?
New crafting?
RR 80 – 100 will require a RvR Pack purchase

The possibility of new crafting and some sort of catapult-like thing makes me happy. Of course, they didn’t say those were in for sure. Be sure to stop by the thread and post your questions. You may get a “no comment”, but you never know.

News from the Front: The Return

After a short vacation, the News from the Front has returned! You guys may have missed it, but Mythic announced the RvR Pack. Next time I’ll try to cover it more. The 1.3.6 patch has been overshadowed by the Pack news, but has been a lot of fun. It just might be the best Warhammer Online patch yet. On to the community news.

The new 6 vs 6 scenario, The Eternal Citadel, debuts this weekend. I suggest finding a group to queue with for this one.

Vizo writes about a positive Customer Service experience. This is nice to read since we usually only hear about the bad cases.
Tyanon lets us know about some upcoming Rune Priest/Zealot changes. These do look like great changes, can’t wait to check them out.
Mmmmm Gud is not a fan of alts. While I am a fan, it is interesting to see a different perspective. As for something special for RR80 characters, that would be fine with me.
Helltrek gives us a breakdown of the newly announced RvR Pack. Even with a lack of details, I am looking forward to new content.
Mr. Meh has updated his DoK Guide. I really liked how he took another look at he perceived the class and made changes. A lot of people would not admit that, so kudos!

Videos

Some organized 6 vs 6 fighting from Gorfang. Best part of the video is that a White Lion took it, which is actually pretty rare.
A webcam video experiment. Multiple webcam’s and fraps were used. It is pretty impressive, 3 monitors/screens which look enormous.
Tier 1 DPS Archmage footage. This had to be a difficult video to make, as it is near impossible to make a High Elf look tough.
Nice video of a Warrior Priest in tier 1. PvE, RvR, PQ’s… it’s all here. This certainly brought back some memories.
A collection of duel footage, with no UI. It actually turned out pretty well. Nasty little Shamans.

I’m starting to run out of titles for these posts. Yesterday saw some interesting news for Warhammer’s RvR Pack. Nothing too exact, but it definitely gives us an idea of what to expect, especially when it comes to Skaven. Read on for the details.

EU player and blogger, Erdknuffel, made his way to gamescom and sat down with Andy and Carrie. The first part deals with the upcoming RvR Pack. Part 2 talks about the recent takeover of the EU servers from GOA. Both are in English, so get reading!

Gamereactor, EU gaming site, interviewed Carrie at Gamescom and got it on video. She talks mostly about the upcoming RvR pack and of course, Skaven.

There are a few things I learned from these:

The new zone can be described as a RvR Dungeon. Skaven do live underground…
Skaven fight everyone. Renegades for hire. Could this mean a pseudo 3rd faction or they are apart of both realms?
No plans for a Tier 5
A Skaven infestation was mentioned.

UPDATE #1:

Erdknuffel isn’t quite done yet. Part 3 of his interview with Andy and Carrie is up! Lots of interesting info in here. New mounts, EU bloggers, add-ons and more.

Recap:

Skaven will be involved in the ‘RvR pack’. No details on how except that they will not be a traditional race which starts at level 1 and lack archtypes.
The renown cap will be raised from 80 to 100.
The RvR Pack (Power, Progression and Personality) will be a paid expansion involving multiple purchase options.
A new RvR zone, has to do with Skaven. Will be part of the campaign
RvR Campaign changes, so long Victory Points.
New Armor beyond Sovereign
The RvR pack is due out before Christmas.
New mounts
