Besides sneezing the whole time I tried to catch up with the news about the RvR pack, did play some WAR and our guild had a RL guild meeting last weekend.

The guild meeting was fun. It’s always interesting to meet the people behind those characters. We drank beer, some have sung a song and we burped, as someone brought a Wii to the meeting. Dwarf-only guilds are the best

Concerning WAR (RvR pack, etc..) .. my mood is atm not so positive. Since the move from GOA to Mythic the performance of the game reached an all-time low. It’s totally horrible playing a Runepriest as there still is the cast-bar bug and you have no idea what you are currently doing. At least I have no clue as I mix several spells and have no fixed rotation for healing. Therefore I need to know what my character is currently doing, but with no reliable cast bar..and several animation bugs it’s totally hopeless to even try to be an effective healer in any way. The new mechanic is still horrible, as it restricts me too much. Well.. I could use those glowing hands if someone of the group needs a beacon if he/she gets lost. Server lag for me is still a big issue and I can’t tell if the warping enemies are cheating or if it’s just the server performance… the game is currently in a state where it’s not much fun to play because those bugs and poor performance.

Adding to this comes the news about the RvR pack. There is not even the slightest glimpse of hype around it.. no looking forward to it. It’s more like a.. “Do I want to grind any more renown ranks, just for the sake of it or just for better equipment”? The information about it is slim and the new producer’s letter isn’t telling anything new, even though Mythic always pointed to the letter for further information.. well.. marketing is telling something different than Andy it seems.

I don’t like the tone of those RvR packs. Vertical progression is something the players are used to from other MMOs, yes.. but it’s imho not the route a RvR based game should take. The tyrant set showed that this is a bad way for WAR.

My problem with WAR right now is.. it’s not about fighting.. Everything is based  around tokens, points and such stuff.. therefore all RvR action is based around keeps, objectives and zone locking. There is hardly any room for fighting. The whole design is not around giving places to fight other than some BO’s and keeps. Only Praag offers enough options for small groups when there is a zerg around. Thankfully our guild runs a rvr roaming group for seeking fights and not for pure/easy renown grind. If I want to farm.. I get to the garden.

For some reason a quote from Groundhog day comes to my mind:

Well.. The patch has some good and some bad stuff..

Just what pops up in my mind..

Good:

Choppa lose their armor debuff and get a heal debuff instead. Funnily the heal-debuff will not do as much damage as the armor debuff

Chosen/KotBS

Resistance reduction by their aura is getting..reduced.

Bad:

Runepriest (and Zelot changes..whereas I agree that the harbinger/transference had to be changed). Overall this “buff” will nerf both careers in funneling them into a defined role without giving them anything as a benefit. No.. making Conquerer/Invader now useful when you are trying to heal is not good. It’s just bad itemization. At least as a Runepriest I think that career is heavily dependent on equipment and switching stances won’t make that bad equipment into something uber..It’s a improvement to being just crap instead of totally f**** crap

Ugly:

Armor debuff for White Lions..  This will boost the damage from that career by a huuuuge amount. I’m waiting for the QQ-posts .. This debuff is too much.
Sweet:

I’m taking some days off and go to Amrum. Some fresh sea air might help me with the allergy which is really bad this year..and maybe the bugs/problems after the patch are solved when I’m back.

Q -  Do you have plans to address the possible issues with the new Zealot/Rune Priest mechanic and their ability to use CC with it?

Nate - It’s a concern, but right now we don’t think it’s really going to be as bad as a lot of the theory-crafting and panic about it makes it sound like it is.  When we tested it internally before it went to the PTS, it was actually pretty minimal and you do always have the option, because your flip-ability is off the Global Cool Down, to flip, use the CC and then flip back.  It certainly makes the Careers a little more involved to play, but that’s not really a bad thing.  If it does turn out to be too impactful to the point where the Careers can’t perform, then we do have some ideas as to how we might change that in the future.

The stagger has a 20s cooldown..the rune of binding has a 30s cooldown. This alone doesn’t fit at all, but what is making me grind my teeth is the second highlighted part.. More involved to play. ..yep.. having to press one more key to get the same utility is great.. erm..let me think about it. Actually that’s not good.

So some RP/Zelots will now have to configure NerfedButtons or their macros on the keyboard to make that stance-dance..(I’m not using any of those, so I don’t have to build new macros ..woohoo ).

I’m now quiet  sure that noone from the Mythic team plays one of those careers on a live server. If they would, they would know that sometimes you have only minimal time for reacting to a threat. Having to switch a stance for surviving is making that utility just worthless, because you are then already dead. No matter if that rune is on gcd or not, just one more keystroke/click and you’re dead. It’s that simple..because all our defense tools can be cleansed. This just gets strengthened when you consider the lag/latency issues on live servers.

Another point is the role of a RP/Zelot on the battlefield. Sure..it’s a healing career and at least many RP just play healbot, but.. there are some out there who heal and support the offense.  At least my silence and stagger are most of the time on cooldown.

This stance mechanic is confining the flexibility of RP/Zelot without giving something in exchange. That’s sad, because I actually like the career, but now..I’m not sure what to do.

Q – Why can the other Realm not see appearance changes?

Carrie - That was done intentionally so that people didn’t just use the system to appear in rags to everybody and hide.  There’s a good suggestion that was brought up in the forums which was to allow a person to say “I would like to see the enemy’s appearance state” but that’s probably something we won’t have for 1.3.6.

I want to end with something positive.. I feared that some folks might abuse that appearance system, but as it’s only visible to your realm I think it’s ok. No disguise and tricks there.

The last try was not..well organized by me and I’m thinking about improving (meeting in a voice chat, IRC-channel) this. The problem is that I’m quiet busy right now and I’m not sure if I organize it in a way that would bring more Bloggers to Warpstone.  I’m not sure if this can be done so spontaneously as I thought in the first place, but I would like to give it another try.

I think that the date on the weekend (most likely a saturday) is the best choice and that 0:oo (CET, i.e. gmt+1) is still a good time for EU and US players. Shall we make another attempt this saturday? *ponders*

It’s a little late, but there were no additional replies on my proposed date for making the group photo of the WAR-Bloggers, which means that we will be not really many Bloggers (6 was the last count) for this picture, but it’s a start Maybe we can arrange another meeting with more Bloggers participating.

So Saturday I will be on Warpstone at 0:00 (central european time). This should be GMT+1 and 18:00 US East coast time (GMT-6). I will wait in the Chaoswastes at the south-west BO, which is the statue if I remember right. This should be easily reachable by anyone.

If we want a friendlier environment we could also move to Eataine, maybe between the middle BO and east-keep. This can be decided when we took the first picture and see how many Bloggers we have.

Maybe I’m just a bit angry because the whole login/registration process got screwed up, because I had an old Bioware account which I forgot, because it’s 5 years old..

It can only get better now ..as I think that at least this registration/login problems are sorted out..and I hope that I will start to get along with that layout-stuff in the near future

I thought about the possibilities to make such a photo. At the beginning I had a regular server in mind for such a photo, but this would mean that some bloggers couldn’t attend with their main chars. This is somehow sub-optimal..

A better server for such a photo would be Warpstone as every Blogger could transfer/copy to it. It’s now open for patch 1.3.6 and so everyone should be able to log onto it.

Edit: Arrgh.. I just saw that there are no character copies available, just templates… *grumbles*

There is just this date-problem.. It has to be a weekend so that this event doesn’t interfere too much with RL. This weekend would be too soon, but what about the weekend after this one. On a Saturday maybe..

The general time I would aim for would be around 18:00 Eastern Time (US, i.e. UTC -6), which should be 0:00 CET (i.e. UTC+1). So the EU-Bloggers won’t have to stay awake too long and the US-ones won’t have to set an alarm clock .

Up to now I have received answers by 6 Bloggers (including those comments here)..It’s not much so I ask you to make some advertisement on your Blogs, so that we get more Bloggers for that picture.

Maybe it’s just a set phrase, but that “many more years” stood out to me. Is it an indicator that the game is running well? Maybe..maybe not. Is it an indicator that the game is getting shut down in a year or so? Maybe..maybe not…. it’s just a phrase, but for some reason I like to interpret it in the form, that the game is still making some profit and there is no intention to letting it bleed out aka running in maintenance mode or a shutdown.

With a gaming running many more year Bootae might get his eagerly wanted expansion

Oh boy.. looks like I am starting to get an optimist..bah. *grumbles and gets some coffee*

This is a valid option in WAR, but I just can’t understand why it’s fun. Well that’s their decision and I don’t blame them for that easy path. There are other options to play this game without any great need for skill.. one is the use of addons/macros which automatize your gameplay.

I know of many guilds who claim “we are not cheating and just use addons which can be get at curse.”. Well.. that’s a little bit simple as an argument for not cheating. On curse you get addons which automate your gameplay..and this is imo cheating. Best example is autofocus (don’t know the exact name of that addon right now as the EU forums are closed). it’s an addon that checks every 0.5 s if you have the same target as the assist-leader and if not it adjusts your target.  No need for your interference after setting the assist-leader.

So you don’t even need any communication through voice chat..or think about target changing.. you don’t need to coordinate in any way..just cycle through your skill rotation and everything is fine. You will make no errors..or switch to late onto another target.. So basically with this addon you just don’t need to train with your group.. look how the others play. Essentially you just leave out all that is supposed to be team work. I don’t understand where the fun part is (other than earning easy renown)..the fun in WAR is all about group (warband) play and how you play together. This addon just cuts those essential part and leaves.. just pixels.

And now I will make some healers hate me.. Click-casting is in the same category.. Not as severe, but this addon functionality gives you functions which the core game just isn’t offering you. I know that this statement leaves me out there to be attacked, but to me it’s a difference if I change the appearance of things or add additional functions.

I could name a few others..but most of them are more greyish.

Funny thing is..I’m an addon-addict. From the first day in WAR I used addons..new unit frames..new buff-indicators..some crafting stuff.. and I don’t want to play without them. I think addons are good, but need some more restrictions. I don’t like it when addons take away your decisions and actions. They should help you but not take over ..  Would WAR be a PvE game I wouldn’t complain, but it’s focus is PvP.. not PvS (Player vs. Script)…so use your skills as a player..and a character.

p.s.: Gromson wrote something about that too (in German). No wonder we came to the same conclusion.. Same guild ..same play style

Most likely those people will search for the Annihilator Set, but let’s be honest.. chances are very slim that they get it by capturing keeps. So most likely those people have to rely on Officer Medallions .. and to some small degree on the bags which they might get from the guild, but the latter is rather unlikely.

So..Officer Medallions.. Anyone noticed that they are now really sparse and tricky to get? When you kill someone you get nowadays most likely Invader crests and above. Officer Medallions don’t drop that often..Back before the last patch you could easily change the higher crests to Medallions and be a happy Annihilator. Now it’s easier to obtain Invader than Annihilator gear..which is somewhat strange, but a obvious side effect from changing the conversion rate from 1:5 to 1:1 and making the city sieges that **** frequent.

My Slayer got most of his Officer Medallions from T3 when he killed those R31 alts.. Now I’m thinking about buying the Conquerer Set, but I have way to few Medallions because I’m already looking at Invader (I don’ rely on the city bags.. Too much based on luck and I just don’t like to do the city siege that often..). The crests are not the problem, but the Medallions..

I’m not sure if this was intended, but this 1:1 conversion  system is unfriendly to lower ranked players. This is something which will hopefully change in the future..The easiest way would be to enable Conquerer Crests to be broken down at the old rate, i.e. 1:5 and leave the higher crests in the current state (1:1). This would increase the overall Officer Medallions to some small degree, enable folks to buy Annhilator and above gear, but would not increase them too much..

Another twist would be that the merchants convert the Medallions.. If I remember right the merchants below T4 allow you to buy a chest which converts e.g. a T3 Medallion to five T2 ones. I’m not sure if this system still exists, but  why can’t  there be such a thing for T4 with Conquerer Crests?

I’m not sure if this are good ideas, but I hope that there will be something done.. It’s just not right that you have more problems with getting Annihilator gear than with Invader.

Today is the date where the copies of the characters and guilds are made for the new servers…so for nearly a week there is no progression pixel-wise. I’m ok with that, but actually many people from our alliance won’t play at all.. I think that this will be a common phenomenon on the other servers. I’m curious if there will be any real fights or just testing of ridiculous specs… How is RvR going when there is no opposition?

I wouldn’t expect many healers out there.. most of them might check out the dps-spec.. maybe even I will try it with my Rune Priest. I might even reactivate my gobbos or the blorc. This is all feeling somewhat weird…but it’s a nice test.. what is the purpose of a MMO when there are no pixels to hunt for and how do the people react?

Most of the time I have short-term goals when I log on or play a character more often than the others.. This week will be different as there is nothing to achieve. I’m also wondering how the scenarios will be as people now don’t try to hunt for those tokens.. and as the renown is irrelevant they will not care about any idle-hands or quitter-debuff.

What would you do if there is nothing to hunt for in a MMO?

This all is a drastic ..cut in the routine people are used to when they log on.

I knew that this would happen, but I’m still a little bit  “oh..”/shocked. I am not surprised that this happened as someone from my guild plays using game-time-cards and when he wanted to buy a new card he got the information that those cards aren’t produced any more. This was a good indicator that the publisher (GOA) will not offer service anymore in the near future.

I’m feeling somehow bad for the people at GOA, as it may cost some folks their their jobs, but overall I’m happy that the service changes. I was not happy with the reaction (times) of the CM’s, which often took days or was just handled by an automatic e-mail. Server performance was bad which may be caused by the location of the servers and not the server hardware itself.

So with EA/Mythic taking over I have the hope that their servers will perform better..

In the forums some people are not sure if the game will be localized any more, i.e. at least a German and a French localization. I’m sure that this versions will stay as Mythic was searching for German and French speaking CM’s on their Webpage, but we’ll have to see. GOA is working on a FAQ which will be released on Monday..so enough time for the doomsayers to predict the ending of WAR. This may have been lessened if GOA would have put the FAQ out when they announced the end of the service..but well.. this just fits..

So lets see what the future brings..

This had two reasons.. The first one.. Well.. RL has been quiet busy this week and I just hadn’t enough time to write a proper post.

The second reason is WAR-related. Because of a low guild activity and high city siege frequency there is just not so much to write about. I don’t want to rant in all posts ..and so I stay silent right now

I began thinking about looking at some other servers..maybe some non-German servers as both German servers seem not that well balanced or just too “zergy”. On the other hand.. I don’t want to leave my guild behind. It’s quiet tricky at the moment.

Carrie discusses the reasoning behind the opening of playing both realms on one server. I still don’t get it why it has to be that bit-logic. If there is just one server for one language I think it’s ok to open the realms, but as a general option it remains wrong in terms of the leftovers of the thing called realm pride.

I have not much to say to the cosmetic changes. Seems quiet nice to have an option to choose the look of your char (especially as I don’t like the warlord-equipment for the Runepriest). I’m somewhat looking forward to the armor redesigns as the Runepriest look quiet similar from sentinel to warlord set (only minor changes to the shoulder part, but the rest is almost the same).

For me the most interesting part is of course the proposed changes to the Zelot/Runepriest.. Sounds interesting, but too few facts. Basically both careers now get some sort of stance mechanic.. hum..Mythic and stance mechanics didn’t work out that well in the past, but I’m willing to get surprised by the changes Anyways..I don’t think that both careers need that much fixing.. some more options yes, but the general career need only some minor tweaking.

I’m happy with this stance mechanic as it seems to work at one of the biggest drawbacks of the Runepriests..It’s the itemization. Runepriests get more competetive with better gear.. I currently run 4 pieces warlord and 3 dark promise and it works imo somewhat well. Previously Conquerer/Invader equipment was just not worth to look at if you try to be a healer..now Runepriests don’t need to do PvE, but can obtain some ok-gear by  PvP (no.. freenowning and city sieges aren’t RvR ). So getting that heal-crit in “heal-mode” by converting the magic-crit from Conquerer/Invader seems nice for rr-range 40-67. I’m looking forward to some more details

Most of the time the scenario is already running for several minutes and the general direction of the outcome is.. set. When it happened that I was there at the start..well, then we were approx. one group vs. 2 full groups.. or the other way around.

So despite the general getting crushed by premades..or steamrolling the enemy (because most scenarios end to be a spawn point camping..it’s just a question which spawn point is being camped.).. you also face the problem with lopsided number of combatants in the beginning of the scenario.

I wonder if that problem could be solved by increasing the preparation timer from 30s upwards to maybe one or two minutes? If the scenario pops up, you may already delay the entering by one minute… so why start the scenario 30s earlier than those people who have to think about it (or delay it for another reason) may decide?

I would like both sides ready for the fight and not that imbalanced stuff I currently face…at least number wise a balanced start shouldn’t be that much of problem. I’m not even talking about setups..just numbers.
